Kingyo Matsuri

Fishing With Cat girl!

Kingyo Matsuri, an arcade-style fishing game emulating the goldfish scooping game of the same name at Japanese summer festivals.  Players tap on swimming goldfish to catch them and earn points, racking up a combo and going for high scores. However, players must wait until the fish stop swimming before tapping on them, or else their net will break! As they keep earning points, a fever bar will fill up, allowing them to activate a “Fever Mode” for ten seconds, where they can tap any fish without worry of losing a net.

More about the project & Me:

Kingyo Mastsuri is created by me and four other students in the same course. In this project, my primary role is the technical artist. My focus is to create assets like shader and particle effects appropriate and effective for the game’s feature. As we progressed with asset creation, I realized there were some performance restricts in 2D form like the vertical movement of the fish, it's not impossible to accomplish but consider the time limation we have, I decided to go from a 100% 2D game to a 3D game with 2D sprites.

During the development, I’m successful at creating a well performed and interactively water with shader graph, which is also my main challenge. The water’s material is hard to reproduce and adjust within a particular style. For our case, it is the cartoon style. After a considerable amount of research and learning, I finally came up with a water shader that my team and I were satisfied with.

To make this shader useable in the build, I also need to make sure each key value is in the properties with the correct naming reference. So, the other group member can control and adjust the value outside of the shader graph. And whenever there's any technical issue about shader and render, like visibility and movement of fish sprite when underwater. I'll try my best to solve and explain it to my group to prevent having the same issue in the future.
